Ultimate Guide to Family-Friendly Activities While Traveling

Updated: Sep 20

Traveling with kids can be a rewarding experience, but it also comes with its challenges. Keeping the little ones entertained and engaged while on the road can sometimes feel like a daunting task. Fear not, because we have put together our top 5 tips for family-friendly activities while traveling that will help you make the most out of your adventures with the little ones.

  1. Pack a Travel Activity Kit: Before you hit the road, make sure to pack a travel activity kit filled with coloring books, crayons, stickers, and small toys to keep the kids entertained during long stretches of travel. When we went on our California road trip I made a USA themed activity book & journal before we left by printing out activity sheets from the internet. This made a lovely keepsake on our return.

  2. Play Travel Games: We love the ABC game on long journeys. Pick a catagory (it always seems to be Pokemon when my sons chooses) then go around each person naming something from that category going through each letter of the alphabet.

  3. Explore Nature: Take advantage of the great outdoors by exploring local parks, hiking trails, or beaches that are en-route. Plan in time on the our journey to make these stops part of the adventure. We nearly always pack a picnic when on long driving days so we can stop for lunch when we are ready and it often means we can take advantage of an unexpected beauty spot.

  4. DIY Souvenir Hunt: Turn souvenir shopping into a fun activity by giving each child a small budget to find their own keepsake from the trip. My kids would literally spend all day in what we call 'tat shops'.

  5. Technology: The inevitable tech always makes an appearance on long journeys. I never feel guilty about this though as we have action packed days sight seeing, walking for miles, spending quality time together. We all need a bit of down time and if that takes the form of a tech break whilst travelling well so be it.
